Gordie Howe International Bridge Construction Kicks Off
Shovels hit the ground today as construction starts for the Gordie Howe International Bridge. Construction kicked off with an announcement for the bridge, bringing in government representatives from all levels, individuals from separate organizations and more. Speakers at the event included Prime Minister Justin Trudeau, Minister of Infrastructure and Communities François-Philippe Champagne and Governor of Michigan Rick Snyder among other dignitaries from Canada and the U.S.
The 2.5 kilometre bridge costs a total of $5.7 billion and will be running in 2024. The bridge will be connected directly to Ontario Highway 401 and Michigan Interstate-75. Unlike the Ambassador Bridge, the Gordie Howe International Bridge will also feature a pedestrian walkway. Construction and maintenance of the new bridge will bring in 2500 jobs between the U.S and Canada.
