Wedding Season

Feb 20, 2015

With wedding season around the corner, event coordinators are working with couples while they prepare for their big day.

Steve Potres, 20, business owner of Exquisite Event Rentals, said wedding season typically begins at the beginning of May and lasts until mid-November.

“Surprisingly, September is a very popular month this year,” said Potres. “It is evident that couples are trying to stay away from the humid and hot weather that we experience in the months of June, July and August.”

Although Potres said September usually has ideal weather for a wedding, last year he experienced a very high volume of weddings in the month of August. Potres also said paler colors seem to be popular this year.

“We are noticing that champagne is still a very popular wedding colour,” Potres said. “Throughout the years, couples have been leaning towards softer tones making champagne, ivory, and blush pink a great colour scheme for a wedding which I personally recommend this year.”

Nataly Oraha, 24, is soon to be married. She chose July 18 to be her wedding date, but not because of weather conditions.

“We chose July 18 because we got engaged last year on the 17th, so we decided to get married in the same month,” Oraha said. “It’s kind of cheesy but it fell into place the way it was supposed to.”

As for theme and colour, Oraha said she didn’t find the need to copy most weddings but decided to go with a mint colour which would make it stand out because it is different.

According to the Wedding Planners Institute of Canada, a Canadian couple spends between $25,000 and $40,000 on their wedding. However, Potres said he has worked with couples who have spent as low as $5,000 and as high as $160,000. Oraha said she thinks the best price range one can spend on a wedding is about $40,000 but it also depends on how many guests attend.

“I would say $40,000 is a good price range because in my culture we throw a huge party with about 550 guests. It brings everyone together, it’s amazing,” Oraha said, who is Middle Eastern.
