Heat wave causing orchards to produce abundance of apples
By Shirley Feng
Fill your baskets at one of Essex County’s apple orchards before it is too late.
“Because of the warm weather this September, apples mature quickly and we have to pick up some varieties now to avoid waste,” says Krissy Thiessen, owner of Thiessen Orchards in an update on her website.
According to thiessenorchards.com, apples are growing faster than usual because of the unseasonably warm temperatures. This also happened in 2012 when the weather became warm before Spring. Orchard farmers are concerned about this situation and say they must pick and save as many apples as they can right now because they are ready sooner than usual.
If you enjoy picking apples, get to Thiessen Orchard or any of the other apple farms before the end of September. Taste many of the varieties of the fruit that southern Ontario’s orchards have to offer.
