High school students test skills designing vehicles of the future through WEEDC competition
Students in Windsor-Essex are getting the opportunity to take part in a competition that will creatively allow them to design vehicles of the future.
Open exclusively to high school students, the competition was launched by the WindsorEssex Economic Development Corporation (WEEDC) last week. Thirty students from Leamington District Secondary School and Tecumseh Vista Academy attended to learn more.
Susan Anzolin, executive director of WEEDC’s Institute for Border Logistics and Security explained that the competition is “an opportunity for students to really think about what the vehicle is, what it means to them, what’s the impact of technology and vehicles and how it will impact communities in Windsor Essex.”
“Getting them to be excited and engaged about what we’re doing is critically important to us,” she said.
Tecumseh Vista faculty member Lauren Omstead said students were excited to be involved in redesigning the future.
“Not only are they designing the vehicles of the future, but they are designing a future they want to be involved in,” she said, in a phone call.
Prizes are available for winners of the contest, including two passes to the North American International Auto Show this June, as well as two $100 Devonshire Mall gift cards. “I think they’re more excited about the physical rewards, like the Tim cards and the pizza,” said Omstead.
Participants have until March 31 to submit applications, and the winning design will be announced on April 6.
