How Social Media is used in school curriculum
Social media has changed the world forever and it was just a matter of time before schools adapted and started using it in their curriculums.
“Social media is also used to keep in contact with parents and inform them of what their kids may be up to when they attend school”, said Kari Bryant Superintendent of the GECDSB. Social media is a great way to showcase work or even promote events or fundraisers that the school may hold in the future to gain support, Bryant said.
According to teachers across Canada, engagement is key in the classroom, if you don’t engage your class it may be very difficult for some students to learn. Social media is a great tool
because students are so familiar with it.. It also allows students more freedom to collaborate or connect beyond the class.
“Receiving assignments that involve social media are always my favorite because I use Twitter, Instagram and Snapchat anyways so it’s really like killing two birds with one stone”, said Dylan Charron, a former student of the WECDSB. Assignments that involve posting social media allow students to be themselves and use their creativity.
Students aren’t the only ones who benefit from social media in classrooms. Many teachers also have used social media to their advantage. Social media can aid teachers in presenting information in a way that could be more effective than traditional ways.
In all, social media has its negatives in classrooms but it also has positives. It all depends on the ways you use it.
