The Windsor-Essex Humane Society is extending animal control and pound service for dogs to Amherstburg.

The Town of Amherstburg put out a bid for the service and Humane Society reps felt they could fill the need.

The Humane Society provides intake for stray cats in Lakeshore, Tecumseh, Essex, and Kingsville. However, Amherstburg is currently the only county municipality they provide stray dog services to.

“Historically, many small communities only offered a ‘dog pound’ for stray dogs. But today, residents expect a higher level of service and animal programs,” said Melanie Coulter, executive director of the Windsor Essex County Humane Society. “We are excited to work with Amherstburg to provide animal services to the town, and hope that the residents will be pleased with the services we will offer to the town’s animals and citizens.”

The services in Amherstburg will begin Dec. 8, 2017.
