The St. Clair College men’s and women’s curling teams traveled to Weston Country Club in Etobicoke to take part in the fifth annual Humber Bonspiel hosted by Humber College.

On Jan. 21 and Jan. 22, six schools participated in the bonspiel, each with a men’s and women’s team. The schools in attendance included St. Clair College, Humber College, Fanshawe College, Fleming College, Mohawk College and Niagara College. Each team played five games. In the end the wins were added up and whoever had the most after the five games won the tournament.

St. Clair came out with a 1-4 record with their only win against Niagara. This record put them in last place. The Fanshawe Falcons took first place in the men’s division with a perfect 5-0 record. The Humber Hawks women’s team defended their title for a second year, also finishing with a perfect 5-0 record.

“The teams both played very well,”  said St. Clair coach Nick Katzenberger. “They worked well together as teams and they all had fun and that’s all that matters. I believe they will all play great this year and make it far in the tournaments [to come] and hopefully make it to Nationals in Alberta.”

When the topic of Provincials in Sault Ste. Marie came up, Katzenberger said, “the men’s team has a great chance to medal this year, they just need a little more practice as a team. They can really go far this year.” As for the girls team, Katzenberger thinks the women’s team, “with a little more practice together, can also go really far this year and they can all do great.”
