Influenza cases are on the rise in Windsor-Essex and health officials are urging residents to get their flu shot.
The health unit didn’t provide specific numbers but said the number of incidents involving young children and infants was increasing.
Every year, more and more deaths in Canada are attributed to influenza, a virus that causes pneumonia, fever-related convulsions, encephalitis (inflammation of the brain) and ear infections.
Officials encouraged urged residents, especially parents and health care providers, to get a flu shot.
“The flu vaccine is considered safe and recommended for all pregnant women at all stages of pregnancy and mothers who are breastfeeding,” said Acting Medical Officer of Health, Dr. Wajid Ahmed.
The vaccine is free and available at medical clinics and pharmacies.
