Investment into after school
The provincial government is investing $13.5 million dollars into after-school programs across the province.
This is especially important for low-income families in Windsor to help kids start healthy eating habits.
According to Sandwich Teen Action Group centre, executive director John Elliott, it also helps kids walk a straight line.
“A lot of times with some of the kid’s parents have to work and there’s no one home. So they’re left to their own devices. Not to say their bad kids or anything, but they’re hanging out, sometimes trouble will find them,” said Elliott.
Children can also go hungry if their families are not making enough money, according to Katie Gieb, director of program services at Drouillard Place. This is why students who participate in the centre’s literacy and homework programs receive healthy meals.
“Our children are hungry. They come from families who access food banks. So for us to be able to provide more nutritional meals as opposed to just snacks would be better,” said Gieb.
She also said investing in proper nutrition for children would be a wise use of the government’s money.
More to come.
