Is film dead?
Film was the standard medium of photography for decades. For journalists and the general public. But that all changed when digital cameras became affordable at the consumer level. A big shift happened, and all the sudden people were trading their trusty film cameras, for low megapixel digital ones.
While lots of people switched over, there were some that never have. Brad Maclaren, owner of Maclarens Photo Lab in Windsor says that most if not all of his older costumers have not switched over. Due to familiarity and convenience. But he has also seen a lot of young people using film, and has seen an increase in younger customers since the shift.
Experts who have witnessed the shift say that it took only a few years for digital cameras to take over, and by 2007, 2008 cameras stores in Windsor started to shut down. Now, there are only two remaining camera shops that were established here.
Adrian Harte, owner of Photo Outfitters in Windsor says he expects to see more young people using film, and although most people who saw the shift happen may believe film is a dead medium, he says that it’s not going anywhere.
