Islamic Community of Windsor reacts to mass-shooting in New Zealand
Religious leaders and local politicians gathered at the Windsor Mosque to show solidarity with the Muslim community after two fatal mosque shootings in Christchurch, New Zealand on Friday.
49 people were killed and more than 40 were left injured following the shooting.
“Full hate crime,” is how local Imam Yousef Wahb characterized the attack. “This man was getting influenced by a lot of hate and racism discourse.”
“Our families and their friends who got killed there are not only the victims of that shooter, they are also victims of Islamophobia,” said Wahb, who is also the Education, Youth and Outreach coordinator with the Windsor Islamic Association.
The suspect in the shooting remains in police custody.
