Kobe Bryant’s Humanitarianism
For Kobe Bryant, “Something more,” was not his talent on the court, but his humility off it.
Bryant had a taste for philanthropy. In 2006, he founded his charitable organization, originally called the VIVO Foundation, but later renamed to be the “Kobe & Vanessa Bryant Family Foundation.” The Family Foundation is focused on providing support for disadvantaged youths and widening their global perspectives. The foundation also offers youth athletic programs and aid for youth homelessness.
Bryant’s humanitarian contributions were not just a look at the bigger picture, but also caring for individual cases.
According to American criminal justice activist Shaun King’s Instagram, in 2017, a Texas teen named Kevon Edwards was struggling to get over the loss of his little brother Jordan, who was murdered by police. Bryant sympathized with Kevon’s situation and not only gave him two pairs of his shoes and a signed Lakers jersey, he also personally reached out to Kevon (who had admired the basketball star’s career) with a phone call, to give his condolences to the teen.
Bryant’s life had unforgettable ups and downs and the impact he had on his fans was true philanthropy.
