Up to 65 local businesses affected by February’s COVID-19 mandate protests will receive over $500,000 in federal funding.

Local organizations within Windsor helped to ensure every business eligible for the money can access the support. The decision came after the federal government’s announcement in April to give $2.5 million in non-repayable funding for costs not covered by other federal programs.

Some of the businesses receiving grants include accommodation and food services, retail trade, health care, finance and warehousing.

Applications to the program – which have closed – were overseen by the West Windsor Small Business Relief Fund, managed by Invest WindsorEssex.

The protests took place on Huron Church Road at the foot of the Ambassador Bridge between February 7 and February 13.

Barriers were placed along the road to maintain traffic flow after the protests, but these barriers also restricted access to the same businesses applying for funding.
