Local college food drive should have good turnout

St. Clair College has recently kicked off their annual can drive to help students in need.
Their collection started the beginning of November and pickup dates are in December. People can apply to receive canned goods in the Student Representative Council office at the main campus by Dec. 7. Toys and non-perishable foods are given to those who need it.
Last year’s Trick or Eat Can Drive raised $330 for the Raise a Reader event. The St. Clair College food bank has been around for roughly seven years. According to Keri Bagley, president of the Student Representative Council, the Trick or Eat Can Drive is held every October and has been around for at least three years.
“I think the can drive is very good for the community and the college,” said Brett Hedges, director and varsity for the Student Athletic Association at St. Clair College. “This time of year there are needy families who are struggling, and donating really helps them out.”
Hedges has donated to local food banks and attended events where the admission fee was canned donations.
“Currently we have 68 students in the food bank,” said student services officer Iva Hobbes. “But around Christmas we have around 100 applicants.”
Foods are checked for expiry dates and are sorted through. St. Clair College is now asking the community to donate as well. They are doing everything they can to help their students and make sure they are taken care of.
Students have already started donating for the can drive. The cans are being donated and held at the main campus and the new student center downtown.
