Local Islamic high school is asking for help

The Windsor Islamic High School board members are requesting help from the community to raise funds for expanding the school facilities.

Both the school board chair and the imam of the Windsor Mosque appealed to a crowd of roughly 100 people coming an event at Windsor Mosque on Feb.27 by asking attendees to donate to school funds.

“This is an investment for future generations, for our children and grandchildren,” said Mohamed Mahmoud, the Imam of Windsor Mosque. “When we started the mosque in 1986, we did not expect to grow it this big. Also when we started An-Noor primary school, it had only one room and now we have two primary schools in Windsor.”

Mahmoud also said, in the beginning, things are always difficult but as time passes, more people will start joining. He urged attendees to donate as much as they could at the event.

“This is a first fundraising (event) for the high school which started its operation last September,” said Mohammed Moussa, chair of the WIHS board. “The school initially had 11 students and we started with Grade 9. The school will be starting (Grades) 10, 11 and 12 within the next few years.”

According to Moussa, the school is run by funds from students’ tuition and community support. The funds raised from the event will be used to run the day-to-day activities of the school.

“We will spend money to extend the facilities of the school like the laboratories and the library,” said Fayaz Ahmed, principal of the high school. “We are planning to have more fundraising activities during the upcoming Ramadan when people donate a lot.”

The school is expecting more students to attend next year Ahmed said this explains why they are so focused on expanding the school facilities.

To stay an Islamic school, Islamic Studies were made compulsory with the Ontario curriculum, according to Ahmed. Arabic is also taught at the school.

The WIHS is the only Islamic high school in Windsor.
