Local literacy “Super” hero Arnot Ross McCallum has died at 87
By Travis Conant
Teacher, writer and dedicated mentor, Arnot Ross McCallum has died.
McCallum taught at several elementary schools in Windsor/Essex throughout his career, including Harrow Public School and King Edward Public School. His impact on students, colleagues and the community is evident from the many remembrances to be found online today as news of his passing was announced.
From remembering.ca:
“I taught with Arnie during my two years at King Edward Public School. The main thing I remember about him is that he was a hugger. I last saw him at a Patterson reunion a few years ago. He rushed up to me and gave me a 5 minute long hug, while he said a poem about me that he made up on the spot. His hugs, his smile and the joy he brought to all will be missed.” – Grace Pollard Leach
From Facebook:
“Super Rex creator! He was a wonderful author and caring individual! He did so much to promote the reading for children.” – Melody Fitzpatrick.
As a teacher, McCallum was known by a generation as the creator of the Super Rex reading program. Later in life, he published multiple books for children, including poetry and tales of a young Arn. He was a frequent presence in poetry and writing contests, and other literacy celebrations for schools and organizations in the region.
He will be missed, as can be seen from the many tributes written on McCallum’s obituary and local Facebook posts. You can share your thoughts for the family at http://windsorstar.remembering.ca/obituary/arnot-mccallum-1932-2019-1072631930
