Low Carbs changes lives

Google has released the top search terms for New Year’s resolutions in 2018, with it 10 most googled diets from last year.

The ketogenic diet, or more commonly known as “keto” was one people were especially drawn to. Back-up stores of carbohydrates can take three to four days to deplete during the diet. After this happens ketosis begins as the body switches to burning fat as its primary source of fuel, which triggers weight loss.

Leah Fecteau, a 23 year old nursing graduate, has been on the diet for three months and has already seen major change.

“I have already lost 17 pounds after starting this diet, I’ve never been happier with myself,” said Fecteau.

Though this diet is similar to the Atkins diet, a low carb high protein intake that became popular in the early 2000s, it does have notable differences.

Dr. Henry Fortuna compared the two diets not by weight loss, but by the medical benefits.

In Canada a lot of the chosen protein is red meat, which is very bad for you. Dr. Atkins died of a heart attack which is exactly what the diet does, it clogs arteries.

“I never prescribed the Atkins diet to my patients” said Fortuna.

Fortuna said he does not believe he would prescribe the keto diet either, but it does have proven health benefits, especially to those with severe seizures and type 2 diabetes. He said the high fat and low carbohydrate diet can control the glucose in the body causing a positive reaction.

`“I’m never going back,” said Denis Desaulniers, a 46-year-old father and full time Chrysler employee. “I started this diet at 340 pounds and I now weigh 249 pounds — I lost 91 pounds.”

“I’m never going back to eating like that again, I tried everything previously, the kettlebell workout, and everything else you can try. The kettlebell workouts had me miserable, I was sore everyday and once I stopped going I gained more weight than before,” said Desaulniers.

Before trying this diet, it is best to consult with your family doctor or a nutritionist to see if the keto diet will benefit you.
