Construction on the new roundabout in Historic Olde Sandwich Towne unveiled some of Windsor’s deep history.

Historic relics including arrowheads and pipes are some of the items found below the terra firma during the construction of the new roundabout in Olde Sandwich Towne. The roundabout was put in place for the intersections at Sandwich, Riverside, University and Rosedale to help make it safer. Excavation began in September and is now complete, but was paused when artifacts were discovered on site. Representatives of Walpole Island First Nation and an archeological digging company searched through dirt to find the remaining relics at the site.

The artifacts were kept safe at the Chimczuk Museum after the discovery in 2017 and are now on display at the Art Gallery of Windsor. Regular gallery hours are 11:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m. from Wednesday to Sunday.

For more information on viewing the artifacts contact the Art Gallery of Windsor at 519-977-0013.
