New Mario Kart Team coming to St. Clair College
Mario Kart is one of the most popular games ever created. It is so popular, it has bridged the gap between the casual gamer and someone who is more of a hardcore gamer.
This year at St. Clair College two students will be putting together a Mario Kart team.
“There’s a lot of people I know that play the game casually,” said Jackson Gallant, one of the co-creators of the new Mario Kart team at St. Clair College. “I could see a lot of people that aren’t as into hardcore esports maybe see this pop up and want to get into the scene.”
Esports, which originally stood for electronic sports, has become very popular among younger generations.
While college has only been doing esports since 2017, they have built a state-of-the-art facility known as the Nexus.
“It’s fairly small overall but it’s growing rapidly,” said Shaun Bryne, the esports director at St. Clair College. “Here at St. Clair, we started in 2017 and we have grown to have several hundred students involved.”
The question is how many teams they will be competing against.
“As of right now I do not have a specific number of teams,” said Gallant. “Last year, there were a total of three divisions and 24 teams.”
Gallant said a lot of people are trying to get teams together to compete so there might be more than last year.
