NHL Lockout Brief – Oct. 26
By Kenton Wolfe
An 82-game schedule is no longer a reality with the NHL owners and NHL Players’ Association making no progress in the ongoing negotiations of a new collective bargaining agreement.
All games scheduled until Nov.30 have been cancelled after the NHL withdrew their latest proposal to the players’ union. The offer included a 50/50 split of all hockey-related-revenue and alterations to the schedule which included all 82 games.
Should a deal not be reached shortly, the NHL is expected to cancel events such as the annual New Year’s Day Winter Classic, scheduled to take place at Michigan Stadium between the Detroit Red Wings and Toronto Maple Leafs. Also in jeopardy are the All-Star Game and Skills Competition in Columbus, Ohio.
Negotiations continue but no meetings are currently scheduled between the NHLPA and owners.
