Nicolas Cage’s head may bring world record to Windsor

By Matt Recker

Nicolas Cage may be putting Windsor in the record books.

Local artist Thomas Malone wants to break a Guinness Record for the world’s largest mosaic, and he’s using the actors likeness to do it.

“It came to me as an ‘Ah-ha!’ moment”, said Malone.  “I was sitting in my car and I thought wouldn’t this be funny.”

Malone is raising money for the project on Kickstarter. This website uses crowd funding to source money for projects from public donations. His goal is $52,000.

According to Malone the veteran Hollywood actor has a cult following on the internet. Fans are drawn to the eccentric actor, partially because he is not active on social media.

“He’s got this mysterious allure,” said Malone.

The current record for the world’s largest mosaic is 21,600 square feet. In order to break this record Malone would need to find a plot of land the size of four football fields in order to make his dream a reality.

“My dream is to make it a permanent installation,” said Malone. “It would be a great tourist attraction for the city and I hope the city could see that.”

“I haven’t gotten permission from the town yet, but if I don’t I’ll do it somewhere else.”

Malone wants the mosaic to not only put Windsor in the Guinness book, but also make it a “must-see” city for tourists coming to Canada.

As of Friday, Feb 10 the project has raised over $22,000. Malone is offering rewards for different tiers of donations. A donation of $20 will get you a Nicolas Cage coffee mug, $45 will get you custom printed Nicolas Cage playing cards and $60 will get you both of those plus a t-shirt.

If the project doesn’t reach its $52,000 goal by March 5 the money raised will go back to the people who donated it and the project won’t succeed. According to Malone this possibility won’t deter him and he will simply try again.

“It’s going to happen,” Malone said confidently.

The project can easily be found on Kickstarter.com by searching “Nicolas Cage mosaic” if you want to help bring the face of Cage to town.
