Ninth Annual Suicide Awareness Walk will be held on Sept. 29

On Sept. 29, Windsorites will walk in unity to raise awareness for suicide.

Meeting at the St. Clair College Sportsplex at 8:30 a.m., local community members will have the opportunity to walk a two or five-kilometer route to promote suicide prevention.

Kerri Hill, Canadian Mental Health Association (CMHA) representative and organizer of the Suicide Awareness Walk, explains how the event can help those who are struggling with their mental health.

“This event, along with all the other activities that take place throughout the month, is an opportunity to reduce stigma, to start conversation and to provide support and hope,” said Hill.

According to the CMHA website, in 2022, there were 46 deaths caused by suicide in Windsor. However, plenty of citizens are striving to lower this number.

“Several hundred attend the walk at the St. Clair College SportsPlex, and another 50 or so each attend walks in Belle River and Leamington,” said Hill.

While there are many benefits of this upcoming local stroll, the CMHA representative reveals the main purpose of the event.

“Most of all, the event is to let individuals know that they are not alone, and help is available,” said Hill.
