Social media has fallen in love with goats.

The picture of baby goats climbing all over someone who is trying to look poised and skillful doing complicated yoga poses has the internet going crazy with a new fad called goat yoga.

Charlotte’s Freedom Farm, located near Comber in Essex county, has found a way to raise much-needed funds to support the many needs of its animal rescue farm that is home to goats, lambs, a pony, numerous cats, dogs and various bird species.

Staff are bringing a community of skilled yogis and amateurs alike together.

“We can’t save every animal in the world but what we can do at these events is kind of educate people and give them that opportunity to see animals in a different light” said Amanda Scully, program director at Charlotte’s Freedom Farm.

“Not every farm should be a slaughter farm, you know… it should be a sanctuary, a forever home for animals … (that) have these amazing personalities that deserve love as well.”

Goat Yoga, first offered at Charlotte’s Freedom Farm on Aug. 26, exceeded expectations with 30 participants. The popularity sparked another event scheduled for Oct. 7 which quickly sold out, prompting a third class to be offered Oct. 14.

“If people are raising money for animals, this is the perfect event” said Melanie Coulter, executive director of the Windsor Essex County Humane Society.

“People don’t realize how friendly and the personalities that goats have, they are much like dogs,” said Scully. “It’s funny to watch people’s faces when they realize how amazing these animals are and that they are just like any other pet.”
