No oversized items on school buses

Students relying on public school transportation might have to find a new way to transport oversized items.

If it does not fit into a backpack then elementary and secondary students will not be allowed to bring it on board-provided transportation. Large and oversized items such as instruments or sports equipment may become projectiles and cause injury if an accident occurs.

The large-item prohibition started under guidelines for the Ontario School Boards Insurance Exchange (OSBIE) and it affects all bus companies in the local boards.

The OSBIE states the policy has been in place for some time, but it began to be strictly enforced starting in September.

Both Scott Scantlebury, public relations for the Greater Essex County District School Board and Stephen Fields, communications coordinator with Windsor-Essex Catholic District School Board,  confirmed that the issue will be talked about at the upcoming transportation meeting in December.
