Nothing trumps safety

Walking alone in Windsor can be dangerous, but there are many ways to stay safe if you are on your own.

Faith Paquette said as a young person she feels that her safety is extremely important.

“I do not really feel safe, I have not lived in the city for very long, so some parts of Windsor I do kind of get a little sketched out by,” said Paquette.

Walking alone is something she often must do, and she said she thinks more could be done to increase her safety.

Sgt. Steve Betteridge said street safety is always a topic that can be a good reminder for the community. He also said you should always avoid walking home alone if it is a possibility. If you do have to walk alone make sure it is in a well-lit, busy area not a dark alley, and if you park your car, be very aware of where you are.

“Be aware of your surroundings so that you know if something is suspicious or out of place,” said Sgt. Betteridge. “If it is looking suspicious go to somewhere very busy, and if need be having someone there call 911 for you. Nothing trumps safety.”

Safety personal alarms have been around for at least 25 years and are an alternative to using a weapon or screaming for help. These alarms are an extremely loud and useful way to attract attention if you need help as well as safer alternative for the person walking alone.

Sgt Betteridge said any personal alarm systems or alarms making a lot of noise can be beneficial, whether it is an electronic or just a monitor security system.

“For instance, if there is a slip and fall in an elderly person’s residence or things of that nature,” said Sgt. Betteridge. “Anything that would bring attention to someone who is in need of assistance is always a good thing.”
