Ontario memorial honours fallen firefighters
A special ceremony held at the Ontario Fallen Fire Fighter Memorial this past weekend to honour the bravery, heroism, and sacrifice of Ontario’s fallen firefighters.
The memorial is situated on the southeast corner of Queens Park, and people gathered on Sunday, Oct. 2, 2022.
Since the pandemic’s beginning, there has never been an in-person remembrance.
The ceremony is open to the families of the departed who will be affected by the cancellations in 2020 and 2021.
Along with the 98 names of those lost in 2020 and 2021, the names of 36 deceased firefighters who gave their lives in the line of duty this year will also be placed to the Memorial Wall.
The Red Maltese Cross, a universal emblem for firefighters, is where the Memorial is set up.
An enormous black granite monolith that represents a structure is behind a bronze sculpture that shows a contemporary firefighter saving a young child from danger.
The names, ranks, and dates of death of 913 firefighters whose deaths were deemed to have occurred in the course of duty are inscribed on the polished granite walls surrounding it.
