Organ donors get together to celebrate national Green Shirt Day

To celebrate national Green Shirt Day, people from Windsor-Essex gathered in front of the WFCU Centre to raise awareness and share inspiring stories about organ donation. People around the community came out dressed in green, to support the event and encourage people to register as donors.
A year ago, 16 people were killed and 13 were injured after the Humboldt, Sask. hockey team’s bus collided with a semi driven by a novice trucker who had blown the stop sign at a rural intersection. Broncos defenceman Logan Boulet succumbed to his injuries and his organs were donated to six people.

To carry on what’s become known as “The Logan Boulet Effect,” people all around Canada are getting together to raise awareness and to encourage other people to register as a donor at BeaDonor.ca.
In 1979 Dennis Segatto, the event Co-founder was diagnosed with kidney failure, with only four per cent of function remaining in both kidneys.
“Kidney transplant saved my life and allowed me to live,” he said. “If it is not for those who donated their loved ones’ organs, I wouldn’t be here today.”
The next Organ and Tissue Donation Awareness event will be held on April 27 and 28 at Devonshire Mall.
