The City of Windsor is introducing a Pay for Parking app for both street meters and city-run surface lots.

Users can download the app through their smart phone and pay for parking by clicking a button.

Signs on the meters and pay units will direct people to create an account.

The Canadian arm of the company responsible is Passport Canada, though that name will change in the New Year, because it could be confused with the federal government’s official passport operation.

This app is similar to Park Detroit and is well-established elsewhere in Canada and the United States. The app can be used anywhere including Toronto, Vancouver, Detroit, Boston and Chicago.

This app will not replace the traditional coin operation in Windsor, so drivers can still use coins as well.

The new service will launch on Dec. 18, but the app is downloadable now.
