Pink at the rink
Players in local hockey organizations are wearing pink during their games to promote breast cancer awareness.
The Leamington Flyers of the Greater Ontario Junior Hockey League hit the home ice in their pink jerseys Oct. 22 against the St. Thomas Stars. Their junior ‘C’ affiliate, Essex 73’s, followed suit when they hosted the Alvinston Flyers Oct. 27.
Both teams raised funds by selling their jerseys after the game and giving the proceeds to the Canadian Cancer Society and the Windsor Essex County Cancer Centre Foundation.
Rick Schuchard, director of hockey operations for the Essex 73’s said “Pink on the Rink” continues to be an annual event.
“Jim Proctor approached us five years ago with the idea,” said Schuchard. “He asked us if we could do a pink night for breast cancer. I believe it was his mother-in-law had breast cancer and he wanted to do something to help her. That is where the idea came from.”
According to Schuchard; the night is about the Windsor Essex County Cancer Foundation, with all proceeds going to them. Since 2011, the 73’s have donated over $7,500.
“We give our share of 50-50 from the game to them (WECCCF),” said Schuchard. “Every year we have done this it has been successful. After the game we sell the jerseys for $40 each and donate that to breast cancer. Every little bit helps and it stays local.”
Essex native Ron Gibb, started supporting the cause several years ago by purchasing a jersey. For him it was about helping the cause and knowing the money stays local.
“A few years back, they were raffling off the jerseys and I bought some tickets,” said Gibb. “ Knowing that we helped raised over $7,500 is great and I look forward to how much more we can raise.”
Players say it is about having an opportunity to give back to the fans and the community that supports them and the organization.
Matt Zelko, a defenceman who is entering his second season with the 73’s organization said he appreciate the opportunity.
“It’s always good to give back,” said Zelko. “The community is always there, supporting us and cheering on the team. So events like this where we are able to give back, support and be involved in the community are great, especially since we raised over $1,000 last year.”
