PlayStation’s most recent release is already dead on arrival
Sony has been pushing the PlayStation brand to include more online-only offerings for a few years. Some upcoming releases seem promising. Like Bungies upcoming extraction shooter marathon, though that could be because it’s so early in development. Other projects never saw the light of day, like Naughty Dogs Last of Us Online cancelled before it even released. Then you have Concord, a game most people will never have the chance to play because it only stayed online for 14 days before being shut down.
Concord was a five vs five character-based shooter, similar to games like Overwatch and Paladins with other variations on popular modes from games like Halo and Call of Duty. Players would pick a “Freegunner” (character) each equipped with three of their own unique abilities as well as their own weapon. The gameplay consisted of six modes, all of which were standards for the genre. These included variants of team deathmatch, control, headhunter and others.
The game’s critical reception was mixed to somewhat positive, with review scores hovering between low 60s and mid 70s and player reviews hovering even lower in the low teens and single digits.
Sony reports that the game is shutting down due to poor sales and low player retention rates. They also announced that everyone who purchased the $39.99 game will receive a full refund.
