Windsor police are investigating a hit and run that put a cyclist in the hospital.

The driver of a white pickup truck hit a woman on a bicycle with the passenger sideview mirror on Oct. 27 at 3:40 p.m. on Dougall Ave. They were both travelling southbound in the curb lane.

The cyclist contacted a family member who then took her to the hospital, with complaints of numbness and pain in her left shoulder.

“It’s an act of investigation,” said Sgt. Matt D’Asti, Public Information Officer for the Windsor Police Service.  “We are looking to speak to the driver of this pickup truck.”

WPS do not have any additional information about the driver or the truck beyond its colour, but are encouraging anyone with information about the collision to contact them.

Police will act on any tips they receive regarding the case and will try and locate the vehicle.  According to Sgt. Andrew Randall, who is in charge of the police traffic office, if the vehicle is found, the driver is responsible for providing the ownership and insurance for it.

“With things like this we appeal to the media,” said Randall.

Randall said that Sgt. D’Asti uses social media to encourage anyone with information on cases to contact WPS.  He said Crime Stoppers is also a good source of information for the police.

According to Randall, the case will stay with the traffic department unless there is a direct correlation found between the driver and the cyclist, which may evolve into a major crime.

The current charge to the driver would be failure to remain at the scene of the accident where an injury occurred. The WPS website states under law, an accident must be reported if any of these three criteria are involved: an injury, the total damage to all vehicles exceeding $1,000, or any damage to signs and poles.

If you have any information regarding this accident, please call the traffic office at 519.255.6700 ext. 4211 on Monday to Friday from 7 a.m. to 3 p.m., the patrol staff Sgt. at ext. 4116, or the Crime Stoppers tip line at 519.258.8477.
