Poll shows safety concerns for women downtown

An unscientific survey conducted at the MediaPlex has found more women than men face harassment in downtown Windsor.
Monique Christopher, a public relations student, said moving around Windsor in the evening is not safe because many of the places downtown are not open. She said if something were to happen people would not be aware considering most stores are closed around 10 p.m. and the Transit Windsor buses are not available after midnight.
“I would say high school students are more likely to be harassed just because of their age,” said Christopher.
According to Chistopher, females are more likely to be harassed compared to men. Christopher said she has not personally faced any confrontational situations in Windsor’s downtown during the night time.
Divyraj Mahida, 23, has been studying mechanical engineering for the past year at the University of Windsor. He said he believes younger people between the ages of 18 to 25 experience more harassment.
“It’s safe to move around the city in the night time because The Windsor Police Service is excellent for keeping us safe,” said Mahida.
He sometimes works late at night and has not faced any safety concerns.
Hemil Shah, 19, has been studying networking at St. Clair College. He said he thinks Windsor is a nice city to live in.
He said people are humble and nice and when he came to the city, he was welcomed happily by Windsorites and was accepted in his new environment. Shah said Windsor feels like home. He feels safe because he believes the police are doing a good job.
“Younger people have more chances of harassment rather than older people,” said Shah. “Especially women are more likely to be harassed than men. The reason behind this has more to do with culture than with intrinsic maleness.”
