Preparations for Remembrance Day

A lot has changed for this year‘s Remembrance Day services across Canada because of COVID-19

As Remembrance Day approaches Royal Canadian Legion branches across Canada are adjusting their plans for this year’s observance. Most services are being held online with only a few representatives and very little interactions at the local cenotaphs.

Morris Brause, 59, a retired colonel of Canadian Armed Forces and First Vice President of the Royal Canadian Legion Branch 594 in Tecumseh, Ont. said the Legion’s biggest challenge across Canada was the poppy campaign is used to provide support to veterans and their families.

“We have not been able to get out to as many locations because of the restrictions. A lot of the veterans like to do it and thank their community in person, and we are concerned that we’re not going to be able to raise the same number of funds as we did in the past,” said Brause.

As for Remembrance Day, the legions have encouraged people to not attend ceremonies in person but to view the Remembrance Day services through television and online.
