Prescribed fires planned for Point Pelee National Park
Point Pelee National Park plans to conduct controlled fires to help restore the habitat between March 19 and April 15.
Point Pelee National Park will remain open to visitors during the prescribed fires, but some areas will be closed for a short time to protect visitors and staff.
According to the press release by Point Pelee National Park, the closed areas will mostly involve trail closures, so the road could be accessible. These prescribed burns will focus in savannah areas, and people can make plans to avoid visiting these specific places.
The prescribed fires will only be carried into execution when the weather and environmental conditions permit. Staff will continue monitoring the wind condition and remove the potential smoke from public areas.
The fires will help reduce the number of exotic plants and prevent the spread of invading shrubs and trees to restore a healthy, resilient ecosystem.
