Pub, patrons dig deep for charity

Every Sunday at the corner of Erie and Ellesmere, you’ll find patrons filling the Erie Street Gastropub to play trivia for charity.

The $10 team fee goes straight to the Horizon Children’s Centre, along with 10 per cent of the establishment’s food and drink sales, according to pub manager Josh Flynn.

Flynn said Horizons Children Center, established in 2000, it is a Canadian charitable project running educational programs for vulnerable children and youth in the rural town of Sandema, northern Ghana, West Africa.

“I guess, you know, the thought process behind this was just to raise money for charity, having a good time at the same time promoting our food and drink as well,” said Flynn. “But the main thing is the trivia and bringing people together, having a good time.”

Every week there’s anywhere from 30 to 40 players in the pub that can hold a maximum of 70. The teams answer questions from five categories pulled randomly, but there’s always a music category in the mix.
