Republic Day of India in Windsor
India become independent in Aug. 1947 when it appointed a constitution committee, becoming a republic on Jan. 26, 1950. The new country kept its membership in the British Commonwealth.
Canadians of Indian origin celebrated republic day with pomp and glory over the weekend.
“We celebrate our event with the patriotic songs cultural dance performance and after that we have an Indian foods,” says Nishtha Sharma, past president of India Canada Association.
It’s also a day the people of India remember freedom fighters who died for their belief that India should be an independent nation.
“We are going to have a colourful event there is gone be enjoy with whole bunch of people there are from Indian community and its gone be lots of fun,” says Purnima Kumar, president of India Canada Association of Windsor Essex County.
