Rotating postal strike hits Tecumseh

Postal workers at the Tecumseh Canada Post Office hit the picket lines Thursday as rotating strikes continue across the country. 

More than 125 Canada Post outlets have been temporarily shut down since the rotating strikes began three weeks ago. On Friday, Prime Minister Justin Trudeau said his government may need to get involved soon to end the dispute.

The rotating strike campaign being organized by the Canadian Union of Postal Workers is called “Delivering Community Power.”

Campaign coordinator James Hutt said workers were advocating for improved working conditions and the sustainability of Canada Post.

“We are here to call attention to “Delivering Community Power” and to transform post offices to address poverty, climate change and bring in new services to benefit Canadians,” said Hutt.

The Canada Post of the future needs to focus on postal banking, green energy, and free community space, said Hutt.

Phil Lyons, the president of CUPW Windsor, said the negotiations have been ongoing for 11 months.

“We want to show the public the proposals we’ve brought to the table to make Canada Post sustainable for years to come,” said Lyons.    

This week marks the third week of the CUPW nationwide strike.

The Tecumseh walkout is the third strike to hit the Windsor area, following the strike in Amherstburg on Wednesday and the strike in Windsor Oct. 22.
