Russia banned from Olympics and FIFA world cup 2020

The World Anti-Doping Agency (WADA) declared on Dec. 9 that Russia is banned for four years amidst the Russian doping crisis.  

According to WADA, the Executive Committee (ExCo) unanimously supported the recommendation made by the independent Compliance Review Committee (CRC). The recommendation suggested that the Russian Anti-Doping Agency (RUSADA) be declared unwilling to adhere with the World Anti-Doping Code (Code) for a period of four years. 

“The ExCo’s strong decision today shows WADA’s determination to act resolutely in the face of the Russian doping crisis, thanks to the Agency’s robust investigatory capability, the vision of the CRC, and WADA’s recently acquired ability to recommend meaningful sanctions via the Compliance Standard,” said WADA President Sir Craig Reedie. The compliance standard came into effect in April 2018.  

RUSADA has 21 days to accept the non-compliant notice. 

The Russian flag and anthem won’t be a part of any international games for the length of the ban. Russian athletes who are clear from the doping charges can still participate in the Olympics, under a neutral flag.
