Saints basketball weekend recap

by Kenton Wolfe

Both the men and women’s St. Clair Saints varsity basketball teams dropped their Jan. 9 games against the Fanshawe Falcons.

The women’s team lost 62-47, despite a 15-point effort from Windsor-native Kendyl Rizea. Fanshawe’s Felicia Mazerolle led the Falcons with 15 points of her own.

Despite a strong third quarter by the Saints, the men’s squad faltered to the Falcons 86-72. Alex Temesy of Amherstburg led St. Clair with 18 points including four triples and five rebounds. Matt Nuna and Xavier Jones also had strong games for the Saints, (how?). Boyd Vassell of Fanshawe scored 24 points in leading his team to victory.

Following defeats to Fanshawe, both the men’s and women’s Saints took on the Niagara Knights at the St. Clair Thames Campus Healthplex in Chatham.

The women’s Saints prevailed over the Knights 57-47. Rizea had another strong game, leading the Saints with 21 points, with 11 rebounds, six assists and four steals. The game was tight until the fourth quarter, where the Saints outscored the Knights 19-12.

A strong effort from Temesy and the men’s Saints fell short against the Knights, losing the tilt 94-74. Niagara had a dominating fourth quarter, outscoring St. Clair 34-16.

The Saints basketball teams will travel on the road for the next few weeks, starting against Lambton College on Jan. 19.
