The second chance animal rescue is a non-profit located in Windsor, Ontario. They receive no public funding, and rely on adoption fees and the community’s generous donations to care for the cats and dogs.

Pet Valu in Essex hosted Second Chance Animal Rescue for their adoption event last Saturday.

“The more often we have the animals in public, they get more exposure then we’re able to find more people who are interested and we can find a home for them,” said Julie Bortolotti, board member of the Second Chance Animal Rescue.

The animals coming into rescue often have a lot of  needs, so the finance support to provide care is very critical. As well, Second Chance Animal Rescue needs volunteers help them run events and, of course, serve as foster families.

“The animals of Second Chance Animal Rescue come to us in a number of ways. Some are owner surrendered, so people can’t care for that animal any longer. So we take them in and put them into foster homes. Some of them, mostly the dogs, are pulled from high-kill shelters down in Texas or Georgia,” said Julie Bortolotti. “When it comes to kittens, they are mostly found outsides. So, sometimes we take them when we can.”

There have bandannas available at the store for a donation. Any amount of funds raised goes directly to the rescue animal.

If you’re going to adopt an animal, it’s not that easy. People need to fill out an application.

“And it viewed by our adoption team. It fills our requirements for the animals’ needs and we are secure in knowing that they were providing a good loving home. And then, we set up a home visit, visit their family with any other animals they have in their home and ensure that have a happy environment for their adopted animal,” said Danielle Reaume, board member.

The event attracted many people who wanted to adopt animals and those who had previously adopted animals.

Kat Boldt is a pet foster parent, and she brought the dog she adopted here.

“My dog is eight months old, and she was up for adoption through Second Chance Animal Rescue. She is the sweetest dog … she is super playful, she is friendly, she is honestly like a perfect dog.”
