Second Chance Animal Rescue Windsor and Essex County held an animal adoption event to celebrate Valentine’s Day.

They welcomed anyone to come and get pictures at a kissing booth to raise money for their organization. The adoption event lasted almost four hours and showcased six of their dogs and one cat.

These events help give animals in need a second chance at a good life and allow people to adopt instead of shop, according to Danielle Reaume, the volunteer coordinator of Second Chance Animal Rescue.

Second Chance has adoption events nearly every weekend throughout local pet shops in Windsor and Essex County. This weekend’s adoption site was located at Pet Value at Huron Church and Tecumseh.

Reaume says these events are important to have, and people should look more into them.

“These events are so important because these unwanted but beautiful animals need proper forever homes,” said Reaume. “We just want to find the right family for each animal, so they can have a happy, healthy life.”

The event also featured a bake sale which had treats for the families and their pets. Another supporter, Stacey Riddell, was there selling her homemade cat and dog jewelry to donate to Second Chance. Riddell also brought the cat she fosters to the event in hopes someone takes him home.

“I foster an eight-year-old cat named Monty who is absolutely wonderful,” said Riddell. “I like fostering cats because I love seeing them go to their forever homes.”

Animal shelters are running out of room every day because they receive new animals on the daily, according to Particular Paws. According to the Humane Society of America, on average 2.7 million cats and dogs are euthanized every year, with most of them being older too.

“Adopt older cats,” said Riddell. “They have lots of years left and lots of love in them.”
