Second City’s greatest minds threw away their scripts to battle wits before a live audience at the Chrysler Theatre last week.

The Second City Improv All Star comedy show was born on a snowy Chicago night in December of 1959. The small cabaret theatre grew to become one of the most influential comedy empires in the world.

For Saturday’s show, six comedians from the Toronto area traveled to Windsor to perform improv in front of a live audience and comedian Matt Folliott was excited.

“You just never know what is going to happen. It is sort of like a roller coaster ride, even though roller coaster rides are a lot safer than what we’re doing here tonight,” said Folliott.

Folliott said being a comedian in such a competitive world is hard, but because it is improv, it makes their act stand out more.

The Second City has produced many shows in Canada and the United States, including Saturday Night Live, Second City Presents and The Next Comedy Legend. Since its debut in 1959, Second City has been a starting point for numerous well-known comedians such as Bill Murray, Tina Fey, Amy Poehler and Steve Carrell.

Phatt Al, who is a member of Second City, said making people laugh is not why he chose his career, he choose it because of the experience.

“They call me Phatt Al which stands for people having a terrific time always. I choose to go with that cause as a comedian my main job is to make people smile. Stepping into this career, I never expected it to go as good as it has,” said Al.

Second City will continue its tour throughout Canada with most shows happening in the Toronto area.
