The Windsor Spitfires played host to the Owen Sound Attack in their season opener Thursday night.

Windsor lost 6-1 in a game where the Spitfires could not stay out of the penalty box.

The first period ended scoreless with the teams exchanging a few chances. The Attack outshot the Spitfires 13-12.

The Attack had an offensive outburst in the second period when they were able to find the back of the net on three occasions. The goal scorers were Gilbert Gabor, Cameron Brace and Gemel Smith. Owen Sound dominated possession in the second period and outshot the Spitfires 17-9.

After a rough second period the Spitfires were never able to get any momentum back. Owen Sound scored 1:36 into the third period when Daniel Catenacci tucked in a rebound past a sprawled Jaroslav Pavelka.  The tally was Owen Sound’s second power play goal of the night. Brace hit the score sheet for a second time when his wrist shot found a hole and beat Pavelka on the power play once again. Attack rookie Jaden Lindo added another goal a few minutes later. That would be the end of Pavelka’s night as Jordan DeKort came in to replace him. The Spitfires ended the shutout bid at 16:42 of the third when Michael Clarke converted off of a deflected pass.

Catenacci said the power play struggled in the preseason but it seemed to click against the Spitfires.

“Tonight we executed very well and I thought we moved (the puck) around really well and showed a lot of patience,” said Catenacci. “Guys are getting more confident with the puck and we’re getting used to each other out there.”

Spits rookie Josh Ho-Sang, 16, said although the score was not in the Spitfires favour there was a lot the team can build on.

“I thought our team had a lot of positives and there’s a lot that our team can take from that game,” said Ho-Sang. “We got two points stolen in our barn, but we can go do the same in Sault Ste Marie.”

The Spitfires next play the Soo Greyhounds Saturday night at Essar Centre in Sault Ste Marie.
