Spitfires Mikey DiPietro traded to Ottawa 67’s
Fans filled the WFCU arena Thursday to salute goalie Mikey DiPietro, an Amherstburg native and fan favourite who had just been traded to the Ottawa 67’s.
“I wish him all the best of luck, he has treated me like family for the years that I have come out to the games,” said long-time Spits’ fan Justin Artale. “He is the most generous kind-hearted person. He will go very far in his career. I’m a DP fan for life.”
The deal came to light on Monday afternoon, when Spitfires general manager Warren Rychel went to DiPietro’s family home in Amherstburg to deliver the news.
DiPietro came to Thursday’s game briefly before heading on to Ottawa. He did the ceremonial puck drop and said his goodbyes to teammates and fans.
DiPietro finished his night by posting a very heartfelt note on Twitter for his fans.
It hurts so bad because the time I had was so good. @SpitsHockey @Ottawa67sHockey pic.twitter.com/uQwN4NyqOH
