Spits deal captain Posa to Guelph
by Mitchell Brandner
The last remaining tie to the Memorial Cup winning Spitfires has been cut.
The Windsor Spitfires have dealt overage captain Saverio Posa to the Guelph Storm. With Posa being dealt, Windsor has no remaining players from the squad that won back-to-back Memorial Cups in 2009 and 2010.
Posa was named captain at the beginning of this season after spending the previous three seasons with the Spitfires racking up 45 points in 207 games.
“I’d like to thank Saverio for all his dedication to the Windsor Spitfires organization,” Spitfires president and head coach Bob Boughner. “He’s been a great teammate and leader for our organization. He leaves here as a Memorial Cup champion. We wish him nothing but the best moving forward.”
Posa had 10 assists in 38 games for the Spitfires this season. In exchange for Posa, the Spits receive the Saginaw Spirit’s fourth round draft choice in 2013.
“Saverio is a great example of how hard work and dedication can pay off,” said general manager Warren Rychel. “He came in here four years ago as a fifteenth round pick and became a fan favourite, a leader and a champion.”
With the trade, the Spitfires now have one overage spot open on the roster.
The Ontario Hockey League trade deadline is noon Thursday.
