Spits Shave Off
by Evan Mathias
Two members of the Windsor Spitfires went under the knife to end Movember Dec. 1 at Kelsey’s Movember Shave Off in Tecumseh.
Spitfires defencemen Adam Bateman and John Bowen had their moustaches shaved off for the end of prostate cancer awareness month.
Movember has been personal for Bateman and Bowen, who both have recently had family members diagnosed with prostate cancer.
“My grandfather passed away from prostate cancer and my uncle was also diagnosed with prostate cancer a couple months ago,” said Bateman. “I know John Bowen, his grandfather passed away from prostate cancer.”
Many times players will have competitions to see who can grow the best moustache but Bowen said that was not the case this year.
“Last year I do remember I did, this year nobody really wanted to compete with me,” said Bowen.
Bowen, who was sporting a handle bar moustache, said it was easier to grow this year.
“I grew them last year, they weren’t quite as thick so I figured I’d try them again and see how they would show up,” said Bowen.
As a team the Spits accepted donations all month long for their Spitfires Movember Campaign.
“As a total I think we’ve raised over $1,000. John Bowen himself raised over $500 and I raised over $150,” said Bateman.
Bowen and Bateman both said it means a lot to participate and said they were happy to see everyone who came out to support and donate to the cause.
