International students are taking part in various sports, especially one of the most popular for them – cricket.

Ravi Patel, 23, played on the St. Clair College cricket team as an all-rounder. He said he is a good player and believes in teamwork and leadership. Patel is from Ahmedabad, Gujrat, India. He has been studying construction engineering courses for the last four months and enjoys a game of cricket more then anything else.

“I have playing cricket since childhood, when I was in fifth standard of school. I started to go for training in a coaching institute,” said Patel.  “India is a land of games where every child knows how to play cricket.”

Patel said he had inspiration from the “God of Cricket” Sachin Tendulkar and his ideal player is Mahendra Singh Dhoni. He said he believes playing cricket keeps him healthy and fit. He has won many medals on the cricket field over the years and would like to play for his country in future.

Vinal KatiKala is the international development officer at St. Clair College. He said apart from technical knowledge, recreational activities are also important in a student’s life. There are various types of sports like cricket, volleyball, basketball, badminton available for international students to get trained to play.

“This recreational activity will help the students to grow their career in different fields and they can learn new skills like teamwork, leadership and management, which will help them in future,” said Katikala.

“Especially in cricket, not only the Indian students take part but the students of other countries like Pakistan, Sri Lanka, and Africa. Most of the activities are available for summer seasons only. For improvement in the future we would like to add indoor activities for winter that will help enhance the skills of students.”

Countries with well-known cricket teams are India, Australia, South Africa, New Zealand, England, West indies, Zimbabwe, Afghanistan, Ireland, Sri lanka, Pakistan and Bangladesh.International students are taking part in various sports, especially one of the most popular for them – cricket.
