Starbucks cups stir up controversy

Starbucks has issued their new seasonal cups, and the result is stirring up controversy between customers.

There is social media uproar about Starbucks’ decision not to include a Christmas design on this year’s cups. There are two warring sides in the red cup debate. Those who are for the cups, and those who think it is taking away from the Christmas spirit. Even prominent icons are getting involved in the debate, including Donald Trump, who is advocating for a Starbucks boycott.

What do Windsorites think about the new cups?

“I loved having the Christmas cups. They were festive and they really got me into the holiday spirit,” said Amelia Berthiaume, 16. “I know it sounds silly, but it’s a real bummer.”

Many customers have decided to boycott the company during the holiday season.

“I don’t think I’d go that far, I really need my coffee.” said Berthiaume.

Other customers do not find the cups at all offensive. Kristen Stockford, a Starbucks customer does not have any issue with the new cups.

“It’s a ridiculous thing to be offended over. I remember hearing about this the other day and I was just like ‘really? Is this the biggest issue there is to worry about?’ Happy Holidays or Merry Christmas, they’re both just as good,” said Stockford. “I guess it’s what you would call a first world problem.”

Starbucks says it got the idea of a blank cup from customers, who have been doodling on cups for years. This year’s design is their way of inviting customers to create their own designs with the blank cup as a canvas.

“In the past, we have told stories with our holiday cups designs. This year we wanted to usher in the holidays with a purity of design that welcomes all of our stories.” said Jeffrey Fields, Starbucks vice president of Design and Content in a press release. “We’re embracing the simplicity and the quietness of it. It’s more a open way to usher in the holiday.”

Despite backlash, the company will keep the red cups and continue to embrace and welcome customers of all ethnicities and religions.
