The Windsor Spitfires lost to the Guelph Storm Oct. 4 at the WFCU Centre in a game Guelph dominated from start to finish.

The Storm special teams played a major role in the victory. Penalties made it difficult for the Spitfires to get any momentum in the game. Guelph finished 4-for-12 on the power play.

Windsor head coach Bob Boughner said penalties wore the team down and cost them the game.

“Our penalty killers get tired out after (that many penalties),” said Boughner. “As you get tired you start making mental mistakes and you see it in the second half of the game. There was a lot of breakdowns due to the same guys having to kill penalties all night.”

Windsor was outshot 44-23, and lost momentum after a solid first period in which they killed off three penalties. The Storm scored two goals in the second period and added three power play tallies in the third to put the game away.

Guelph defenceman Matt Finn, 18, said it was good to see the power play working after it had struggled at times this year.

“I think it just clicked,” said Finn. “Everyone was just ready to go tonight and I think it showed through.”

Boughner said it’s best to forget about the game and move on.

“We better put it behind us. We’re playing a good team tomorrow night,” he said.

The Spitfires travel to London Oct. 5 to play the Knights at the Budweiser Gardens.
