Strike closes schools for second day
Ontario’s Premier wants to find a way to get kids back in class and said he’s willing to negotiate under one condition.
“As a gesture of good faith our government is willing to rescind the legislation, are willing to rescind section 33, but only if CUPE agrees to show a similar gesture of good faith by stopping their strike and letting our kids back into their classrooms” Doug Ford said.
School support workers walked off the job Friday protesting new provincial legislation which forced a four-year deal on the workers, but also took away their right to strike.
Demonstrations are planned across the province, the union calling these “political protests,” not a strike.
Meantime, the labour relations board will weigh in on the legality of the job action.
As a result the Canadian Union of Public Employees (CUPE), returned to work. The union said the move will allow schools across Ontario to reopen on Tuesday while the two sides resume contract negotiations.
